Skyrim: Dawnguard DLC Review

Bethesda's first DLC is out for Xbox now and is it feels great to get back into the world of Skyrim. Now only if I could remember what house I left my stuff in. Ah well, at least I still have some things in Breezehome in Whiterun. Speaking which, with Dawnguard downloaded as soon as you return to any city during the night, it will be attacked by several vampires along with an orc vampire hunter named Durak fighting them off alongside the guards and locals. Fight off the vampires and Durak will ask you to join the Dawnguard. Accept his request to start this quest line. Your map will be updated with Fort Dawnguard's location.

From there you meet Isran who immediately sends you off to go investigate a cave filled with vampires. Equip your fire spells!  At the end of the cave where you free a woman from her slumber and escort her home is where you get to make the ultimate choice of this quest line. Join her father Lord Harkon or go back and Report to Isran. If you join Lord Harkon you are given the new ability to transform into a Vampire Lord. Come on, look at that! Who doesn't want to be this bad ass vampire lord.

With me being a dark elf who wanted to be a vampire/necromancer a lot earlier in the game but was having trouble because of all the downsides of being a vampire. One, being scared of reaching level 4 vamperism and having everyone be hostile was definitely something that was going to impede my progress through the quest lines. Well that no longer happens. They removed the hostility of people towards you when you are in regular vampire form and instead only become hostile to you when you are in your vampire lord form making it a little easier being a vampire.

For the transformations of becoming a Werewolf and a Vampire Lord they have added a new independent skill tree for each. However you will not be able to access your magic and items as the menu button for them only open the vampire/werewolf skill tree. Being in your transformed state also prevents you from picking up items and opening chests.

Werewolf skill tree

Much like turning into a Werewolf the Vampire Lord is locked to 3rd person view only. It has 2 modes. One mode that floats in air allows you to use its magical attacks and it's other mode when on the ground lets you swipe with your claws. Another thing to note is that the Vampire Lord floats above water and can not swim. As I mentioned before these skill trees are separate and so are its perk points. To obtain experience for perks as a Vampire Lord you must use your bite attack or use the drain blood spell and as a Werewolf you must feed off the corpses.

I have to come back and try out the Dawnguard path but from what I've read should you choose to stay with the Dawnguard you'll get some new gear and new powerful weapons and even an ability to hire an armored troll on top of your companion. The option to hire the troll wont be available to you if you chose to go with the vampires. Also you obviously wont be welcomed in the opposing castle for obvious reasons. So choosing each side has it's benefits.

Along with the new castles I think there are places that were added to the map because I'm pretty sure I was near some of those areas before. Other new things added are the ability to have mounted combat and a new horse. If you have two weapons you only swing your right handed sword on each side. Probably because because your left hand would be holding on to the reigns. You can also fire arrows while mounted but for some reason you can't use magic while mounted which makes this sort of useless. Most spells are single handed anyways so I don't see why I can't throw ice spears from the comfort upon my horse. That might be my only gripe with the DLC but that could still change.

All I can say is that it's great to get back in the world of Skyrim and with the all the new things this DLC brings I'll be playing for hours and hours along with probably making a new character sometime to see the other side of the quests. Even though this DLC is 1600ms points or $20 I feel its well worth. For Xbox owners you can get it early as it is available now. No release date is set yet for when it's coming out on PS3 and PC owners yet.

Summary:
New diverging quests, new characters and npcs, new Castles and areas, new and more powerful weapons, new transformation for vampires into vampire lords, new skill trees for vampire lord and werewolf transformations, new enemies, new shouts and powers, new badass horse that can be summoned, mounted combat(minus magic) and many more hours of gameplay. Need I say more!

Verdict:
9.5/10 Buy It
